How To Write Books

Posted in Writer by Professional Writer on July 12, 2009

How to write books begins with that first word.  The first step, to get started writing, can be the hardest.  Staring at the blank page, or computer screen, in front of you can be daunting.

The most important this is to just get started.  Worry about the rest after that.

Some tips to get started writing:

Free Flow

Free flow is one idea that works for many people.  The trick to free flow, however, is knowing what to do with what you have written down after you spend a few minutes on it.  Do not allow yourself to free flow for longer than about 10 minutes.  When you are done, make it productive.

Look at what you have written during that 10 minutes and circle, underline or highlight the ideas that surprise or interest you the most.  At this point, start writing based upon that theme.

Sit Still

It can be difficult to force yourself to avoid television, housework, friend and family activities and the telephone, but if you are serious about writing a book, you will have to make yourself sit still and just write.

Avoid Distractions

Avoid distractions by turning off your phone volume for an allotted period of time.  Shut the door to the room you are working in and if necessary, put up a do not disturb sign.  Hopefully your housemates will respect your wishes and give you the alone time that you need to get your writing done.
